Stepping Out of Your Box!
Added on 10/12/2008 14:33:27
A friend told me about the odd day she and her husband experienced yesterday. The car broken down on the way to work and not having a mobile phone with them she had to knock on the door of the house near to where the car had stopped. The owner of the house offered them his phone to call for a taxi and told them that they could park the car on his driveway until they had managed to get hold of the Breakdown services. When my friend arrived at her office she called the AA and they arrived at her car about 2 hours later. While she was waiting for the car to be hitched up on the transporter the owner of the house made her and her husband a cup of coffee and stayed with the to make sure they were OK. The car was taken to the garage from which it was bought, still several miles from where they lived, and she was told that they would find a replacement however, they couldn't offer her a lift home. Another customer in the service office overheard the conversation and asked my friend where she lived. It was a little out of his way but he recognised the name of the village and said that he had a friend who lived there. It turned out that his friend was the next but one neighbour to my friend and he offered them a lift home saying it would give him the excuse to drop in a say hello to his friend. During the journey they talked about his wife who had only recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and how she was worried about losing her hair and all the trips they would have to make to Addenbrookes Hospital. He clearly needed someone to talk to! My friend felt it was such an odd day, a trip that took them nowhere but to a garage where they had to leave their car! However, they met two fantastic people who came to their aid and made their ordeal a whole lot easier. Those two people stepped out of their boxes to help someone else - it could have been so different had they been unwilling to go the extra mile for someone else. Wouldn't it be great if we were all more willing to step out of our boxes and not only see the plight of others but go the distance and help them?
